Sourcing natural stone sinks and bathtubs from Indonesia means placing a container order with a partner who works directly with carving workshops in Bali and Java: you agree on the mix and the Incoterm, pay a 50% deposit, approve HD photos and video of the exact pieces, and receive a crated, fully documented container three to six months later. The process is predictable when someone on the ground manages selection, quality control and paperwork. This guide walks through each step, and explains when it makes sense to buy from an established importer rather than going alone.
Where the pieces come from
Hand-carved stone sinks, pedestal sinks, bathtubs and statues are produced in artisan workshops on the volcanic islands of Bali and Java. Each piece is carved from a single block — river stone (volcanic basalt), travertine marble or petrified wood — and the interior of every basin is polished. Because no two blocks are alike, every piece is unique: it is photographed and sold as the exact item, not as a catalog reference. Marmer Butik has been importing from these workshops since 2013.
| Product | Materials | Typical size | Typical weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vessel sinks | River stone (volcanic basalt), travertine marble, petrified wood | 30–90 cm (12–35 in) | 15–100 kg (33–220 lb) |
| Pedestal sinks | River stone, travertine, grey marble | Approx. 40 × 90 cm (16 × 35 in) | 180–400 kg (400–880 lb) |
| Bathtubs | River stone (basalt), travertine marble | 170–240 cm (67–94 in) long | 800–3,000 kg (1,760–6,600 lb) |

How a container order works
- Brief. You share quantities, sizes, stones, the destination port and your target delivery date.
- Selection. We curate pieces and send HD photos and video of each one, free of charge. Physical samples of small pieces cost USD 200–500 and are refunded on a container order.
- Order. You confirm the selection and pay a 50% deposit by TT.
- Production and quality control. 45–90 days. Each piece is inspected against the approved photos before it is crated.
- Crating and loading. Pieces are packed in wooden crates and loaded according to the packing list.
- Shipping. The 50% balance is paid by TT on the Bill of Lading. Sea freight takes about 20–30 days, depending on the destination.
- Arrival. Import clearance and delivery to site, handled by you or by us depending on the Incoterm.
Minimum order and mixed containers
Our standard minimums per container are 10 bathtubs, 40 basins or 10 pedestal sinks. Most first orders are mixed containers: a base of vessel sinks with a few pedestal sinks, bathtubs or statues. Weight, not only volume, limits a container, so a load of bathtubs fills up much faster than a load of basins.
Incoterms and payment
| Incoterm | Who books sea freight | Who handles import clearance |
|---|---|---|
| EXW | You (you also collect at origin) | You |
| FOB | You | You |
| CIF | Supplier (freight and insurance to your port) | You |
| DDP | Supplier | Supplier — delivered with duties paid |
Payment is usually 50% TT at order and 50% TT on the Bill of Lading. A letter of credit is accepted above USD 100,000. We invoice in USD or EUR.
Quality control and crating
- Exact-piece check: each piece is compared with the photos and video you approved.
- Finish: polished interior, clean drain opening, natural or textured exterior as selected.
- Crating: every piece travels in its own wooden crate, matched to the packing list so you know what is inside each one.
- Weights: the real weight of each piece is provided, so you can plan unloading and positioning on site.

Export documents
Every container ships with a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, Bill of Lading, a phytosanitary certificate when required, and HS codes for each product line. Check with your customs broker which documents your country requires before the container is loaded.
Going alone vs buying from an established importer
| Task | Going alone | With an established importer |
|---|---|---|
| Finding workshops | Trips, intermediaries, language barriers | Workshops already known and tested |
| Selecting pieces | Hard to judge unique pieces from far away | Curated pieces with HD photos and video of each one |
| Quality control | You rely on the workshop | Pieces inspected against approved photos before crating |
| Mixing categories | Several workshops to coordinate | Sinks, bathtubs and statues in one container |
| Documents and freight | You manage everything | Full export documentation and your choice of Incoterm |
Going alone can work for a buyer with a local agent and time to travel. For most hotels, developers and showrooms, an experienced importer removes the riskiest steps — selection, quality control and paperwork — without adding complexity.
Plan the site before the container arrives
Bathtubs weigh 800–3,000 kg, so always confirm the floor load with a structural engineer and plan the access route and lifting equipment. Stone vessel sinks have no overflow: specify a 1¼" pop-up drain without overflow and a tall deck-mounted or wall-mounted faucet. More detail is in our specification guide.
