Yes, travertine is a good material for a bathroom vessel sink — as long as it is sealed once a year and kept away from acidic cleaners. Travertine marble gives a light, warm surface with natural pores, fossils and veining that no manufactured basin can copy. It is softer and more porous than river stone (basalt), so it asks for a little more care, but in return it brings the calm, Mediterranean feel that makes it a favorite of interior designers for spas, hotels and en-suite bathrooms.
What is travertine, exactly?
Travertine is a natural limestone formed by mineral springs: over thousands of years, calcium carbonate settles in layers, trapping gas bubbles and organic matter. That is why every slab shows small holes, bands of cream, beige and honey tones and, sometimes, tiny fossils. In the stone trade it is sold as "travertine marble" because it takes a polish like marble. Our travertine and marble vessel sinks are hand-carved in Indonesia from a single block, so no two basins are ever the same.
Pros and cons of a travertine vessel sink
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Light, warm color that brightens small bathrooms | Porous: needs a penetrating sealer once a year |
| Unique veining, pores and fossils in every piece | Etches with acids (vinegar, lemon, some toilet cleaners) |
| Lighter than basalt of the same size (about 15–20%) | Softer surface: avoid scouring pads and grit |
| Timeless with wood, brass, linen and plaster walls | Can patina with time — part of its charm, but not "showroom new" forever |
How to seal a travertine sink (step by step)
- Clean and dry. Wash the basin with pH-neutral soap and let it dry completely for 24 hours.
- Apply a penetrating (impregnating) stone sealer with a soft cloth or brush, inside and outside the bowl. Do not use a film-forming varnish.
- Wait 10–15 minutes and wipe off any excess before it dries on the surface.
- Apply a second coat on the inner bowl, where water stays longest.
- Let it cure for 24–48 hours before normal use.
When to reseal: drop a little water inside the bowl. If it beads, the seal is fine; if the stone darkens within a few minutes, it is time for a new coat — usually every 12 months in a family bathroom.
Daily care: what to use and what to avoid
- Use: warm water, a soft cloth and neutral soap or a stone cleaner. Dry the bowl after use in hard-water areas.
- Avoid: vinegar, lemon, bleach, limescale removers, abrasive powders and colored cosmetics left sitting in the bowl.
- Tip: keep soaps and perfumes on a stone tray, not directly on the rim — our marble bath accessories are made for that.
How to choose the right size
Measure the vanity depth first: leave at least 8–10 cm (3–4 in) of countertop in front of the basin and room for the faucet behind it.
- 40–49 cm (16–19 in): powder rooms and narrow vanities.
- 60–69 cm (24–27 in): the most versatile size for a main bathroom.
- 80–89 cm (31–35 in): long statement basins for double vanities, hotels and spas.

Frequently asked questions
Is travertine good for a bathroom sink?
Yes. Travertine is a durable natural stone that has been used in bathrooms for centuries. Seal it once a year with a penetrating sealer, clean it with neutral soap and avoid acidic products, and a travertine vessel sink will last for decades.
How often should a travertine sink be sealed?
About once a year in a daily-use bathroom, or whenever water stops beading on the surface and the stone darkens quickly when wet.
Will toothpaste or soap stain travertine?
Ordinary soap and toothpaste rinse away easily on a sealed sink. What causes marks is acid — vinegar, lemon, limescale removers — and colored products left to sit for hours. Rinse the bowl after use and these are rarely a problem.
What is the difference between travertine and marble?
Geologically, travertine is a limestone formed by mineral springs, while true marble is a metamorphic rock. Travertine is more porous and has natural pores and fossils; in the decoration trade it is commonly called travertine marble because it is polished and used in the same way.
Do you ship travertine sinks internationally?
Yes. Every sink is in stock in Brazil and ships worldwide by FedEx in a wooden crate, collected 3 to 7 business days after payment. Import duties and taxes are already included in the price, so there is nothing to pay on delivery.
