Vessel Sink Faucets and Drains: Height, Spout Reach and Pop-Up Drains Explained

Vessel Sink Faucets and Drains: Height, Spout Reach and Pop-Up Drains Explained

A vessel sink needs a tall faucet whose spout clears the rim by about 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) and reaches toward the center of the basin, plus a 1 1/4" (32 mm) pop-up drain without overflow. Get those two details right and a stone vessel sink is as easy to live with as any standard basin. Get them wrong and you end up with splashes on the countertop or a spout that hits the rim.

How tall should a vessel sink faucet be?

Because a vessel sink sits on top of the counter, a standard faucet is usually too short. Use this simple rule:

  • Spout height (from the countertop to the outlet) = sink height + 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in). For our stone sinks, which are about 15 cm (6 in) tall, that means a spout outlet around 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 in) above the counter.
  • Spout reach: the water should land roughly over the drain, not on the side wall. Measure from the faucet hole to the center of the basin.
  • Clearance behind the sink: leave 3 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in) between the back of the bowl and the faucet base so you can clean around it.

Our vessel sink faucets include tall single-handle models in rose gold, vintage bronze-tone and rustic bamboo styles in black and bronze — chosen to match the proportions of natural stone basins.

Deck-mounted or wall-mounted?

Deck-mounted (on the counter) Wall-mounted
Installation Simple: one hole in the countertop Pipes must be built into the wall
Best for Renovations, most bathrooms New builds, minimalist designs, long basins
Cleaning Clean around the base Clear countertop, very easy
Spout height Must be tall (vessel faucet) Set by the plumber at the right height

Which drain does a stone vessel sink use?

Vessel sinks do not have an overflow hole, so you need a drain without overflow. Our sinks are drilled for the standard 1 1/4" (32 mm) size used in the US, UK and EU.

  • Pop-up (click) drain: press to close, press again to open. Clean look, ideal for stone. See our pop-up drains in bronze, black and rose gold.
  • Grid drain: always open, cannot hold water — simple and practical for guest bathrooms.
  • Exposed P-trap: when the plumbing is visible under an open vanity, a metal P-trap in the same finish as the faucet looks deliberate rather than technical.

How to install a vessel sink: the basics

  1. Check the vanity. Stone sinks weigh 15 to 60 kg (33 to 130 lb); the top must be solid and level.
  2. Mark the positions of the sink and faucet, respecting the clearance and reach rules above.
  3. Drill the holes: one for the drain (usually around 44 mm / 1 3/4") and one for a deck-mounted faucet (around 35 mm / 1 3/8"). Check the exact size on the drain and faucet you buy.
  4. Fit the drain with its rubber gaskets; on stone, add a thin bead of neutral-cure silicone under the flange.
  5. Set the sink on a ring of clear silicone, align it and let it cure for 24 hours before use.
  6. Connect the trap and the faucet, open the water and check for leaks.

We always recommend a licensed plumber for the final connection. Ideal finished rim height for most adults is about 85 to 90 cm (33 to 36 in) from the floor, so a vanity of around 70 to 76 cm (28 to 30 in) works well with a 15 cm sink.

Frequently asked questions

How high should the faucet be for a vessel sink?

The spout outlet should sit about 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) above the rim of the sink. For a stone vessel sink about 15 cm (6 in) tall, that means a spout outlet around 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 in) above the countertop.

Can I use a regular faucet with a vessel sink?

Usually not. A standard faucet is too short and the water would hit the rim. Use a tall vessel sink faucet, or a wall-mounted spout installed at the correct height.

Do vessel sinks need a special drain?

They need a drain without overflow, because vessel sinks have no overflow hole. Our stone sinks use the standard 1 1/4 inch (32 mm) size, compatible with pop-up (click) and grid drains.

What is the right vanity height for a vessel sink?

Aim for a finished rim height of about 85 to 90 cm (33 to 36 in). With a 15 cm (6 in) stone sink, that usually means a vanity of around 70 to 76 cm (28 to 30 in).

Can you ship the faucet and drain together with the sink?

Yes. Faucets, drains and P-traps can be packed with your sink and shipped by FedEx worldwide, with import duties and taxes included in the price.
